The West Virginia State Treasurer’s e-Government Services Program provides an electronic payment system for goods and services offered by many state agencies and local governments. This service saves the state time and money while making it easier for individuals to do business with the state. This online payment system accepts credit cards and electronic fund transfers (EFTs). Counties, cities, towns, school districts, and public service districts are eligible for the e-government program, as are the Division of Natural Resources, State Tax Department, and colleges.
For individuals, WV state taxes are based on taxable income, which is calculated by applying the appropriate tax rates to your federal adjusted gross income (AGI). The state also allows deductions and exemptions that can further reduce your taxable income. West Virginia offers several ways to pay your state taxes:
Electronic Payment Methods for West Virginia State Taxes
- ACH Debit: This free option allows direct transfer from your checking or savings account. You can initiate this payment through the West Virginia MyTaxes website.
- ACH Credit: Similar to ACH Debit, but your financial institution initiates the transfer. You’ll need to apply online or submit a completed WV/EFT-5 Electronic Funds Transfer Application.
- Credit Card: This offers convenience but comes with a 2.5% convenience fee (minimum $1) through the West Virginia State Treasurer’s Office’s ePay system
How to Pay West Virginia Sales Taxes?
Businesses that collect West Virginia sales tax must register with the state of West Virginia, apply the correct rate to their taxable sales, remit those collected taxes, and keep detailed records. Businesses with significant taxable sales should consider submitting their returns and payments electronically, using the state’s ePay system.
For remote sellers, West Virginia sales tax registration website includes an option to link a bank account, allowing electronic funds transfer (EFT) of sales and use tax payments directly to the state. To submit a payment, enter your SSN or Letter ID, Account Number, and federal adjusted gross income on the site. Taxpayers can also visit the ePay site to search for their refund information. It’s important to understand that refund time frames are general estimates, and may be reduced or result in a balance due depending on supporting information supplied or on record with the Tax Department.
A taxpayer can file an online West Virginia tax payment after he or she has e-filed the 2023 state return or filed an extension. Alternatively, the person can make an estimated tax payment prior to filing the return. To do so, the individual must provide a valid driver’s license or government-issued photo ID number, account information, contact information, city, state, and zip code.
If you live in the Mountain State and want to avoid paying more tax than necessary, you must file your state income tax return by the statutory deadline.
