Does the Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification, Form W-9 expire? Upon furnishing a requestor with Form W9, know that it doesn’t expire but there are some occasions where a new Form W9 may need to be obtained.
If you’re a business owner, you must obtain a new Form W9 from vendors that appeared on the IRS B Notice List for the first time in three calendar years. Although Form W9 doesn’t necessarily expire in this case, a new one is required. Form W9 can (technically) can only expire if the vendor’s information has changed.
Another case where you may need to furnish a payer or request a new Form W9 from a recipient is when the taxpayer identification number changes. This can happen if the filed individual has obtained a Social Security number to replace the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.
These are the reason where you might be required to obtain or file a new Form W9. If any of it applies to you, make sure to fill out a new Form W9 for the tax year that is requested.
