Fill out Form 1096 below if you’re going to mail it to the Internal Revenue Service. This doesn’t replace electronic filing as you’re essentially filling out a paper Form 1096 but online to print out a physical document later on.

It’s vital to differentiate this from e-filing tax forms as you need to work with a tax preparation service.

Know these before you file

Form 1096 may be a single tax form you need to submit to the Internal Revenue Service, but you’ll file more than one copy depending on the variety of the information returns you filed. For example, if you filed 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC, you need to file two copies of Form 1096 reporting each differently filed form. This doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll file as many Forms 1096 as the number of 1099s you filed. It depends on the variety, not the actual number of information returns.
